Being an Adult and Summer

Before having a baby, I had a part time job with a regional park system. When I didn't have to be up for work, you were lucky to get me out of bed before noon. I loved to sleep in. Even more than that, I loved to stay up late. Rarely did my head hit the pillow before 3 am.

After Peyton came along and started sleeping though the night (at 2 months old. Thank you Peyton!). I was gong to bed around 12 and getting up about 8. Once we moved back to Washington I started waking up at 7, and just recently, I've started attempting to get up at 6 in order to get a shower in before she wakes up. Although the shower part hasn't happened yet, I've been doing really well with get out of bed. Now, if I'm up at 11 I'm pushing my luck. I've started to like seeing the sun raise, the chill in the morning means making a nice warm cup of tea and talking with Jonny before he heads off to work instead of hiding under the covers for warmth. The funny thing is waking up this early makes me feel like more of an adult! An ADULT!?!? When did that happen? I mean, I'm married, I've lived across the country, I've had a baby, I make all of my own decisions, but I never had that feeling of "I'm a grown up now".  It's silly, I tell ya.

This past summer I had plans for Peyton, We were going to go to the park frequently, browse farmers markets, she was going to sit in her high chair and sample fresh veggies while I whipped up something wonderful in the kitchen. We were going to have BBQ's, where she would find the little girl who was to be her very best friend growing up, and our house was going to be the place to be for all of our neighbors to come and fawn all over her. The ladies around the block were going to bring their children over and we'd watch them all play while knitting Christmas presents, or doing paper crafts. We would explore the area and find some really great hiking spots that lead us to a beautiful lake, where we would have family picnics. We would go to the fair and take pictures of her by the Ferris wheel, she'd get pictures taken while riding a pony and Jonny and I would decide it was ok for her to taste just a little bit of her very first elephant ear.

This is how it really went....

We went to the park a handful of times. We never found a farmers market. Me cook? HA! The neighbors had a BBQ. She did meet a little girl next door, and they do get along really well but we don't spend a lot of time together. There were no get togethers at our house. I didn't knit a single thing. I made exactly 2 paper crafts, a birthday card and a string of paper lanterns for Peyton's room that I never hung up. We did go walking with our neighbor and her little girl a good number of times, but we never found a lake. There were no family picnics. We took Peyton to the Zoo, which I think was the highlight of the summer. She had a wonderful time and so did we! I was really looking forward to the fair but, we ended up going the very last weekend and Peyton skipped her naps. Jonny had to get home early because he had weekend duty, and I was sick. No Ferris wheel photo. She slept for about 10 minutes and we couldn't get the pony ride done. We got an adorable caricature of Peyton done and I met one of the guys Jonny works with, his wife, and their little boy Mason. They were all very nice and I enjoyed talking with them but I haven't spoken to her since.

As you can imagine, I'm a little disappointed with what became of summer. Lots of days spent indoors and not enough making memories. I'm hoping Fall will be a little more exciting. I've recently discovered Pinterest and found a great print out of things to do this Fall. It's by Katie at LovesofLife

Photobucket

Here hoping Fall looks a lot different then summer! I'm so excited for what's next to come.

  1. I LOVE the idea of making a "Fall Bucket List" I think I'm going to have to do that!! Hope you guys are having fun, we really need to see you when you come this way or we need to make a trip to see you. I was looking through pictures the other day and found the ones of us bowling and it made me think of all the fun we had together when you lived here....

  2. Laughing WITH you on the expectations of parenthood!

I feel most like an adult when I get and pay for a visit to the dentist.

  3. Kelly, We'd love to see you sometime :) Do you still have the pictures from bowling? I'd love to see them. Halloween is right around the corner, I always think of you this time of year. :) Miss you guys! Do you still have Bunko nights?!? I keep thinking I should come up with something like that here but I never know enough people to make it fun :(. You guys are always welcome to come visit when you have time. We'd love to have you.

Keri, I remember the first time I paid for a dentist visit..(I had a lot of work done)it was shocking how much the bill was. But I do remember walking out the office a little taller. lol You guys seem to do a lot with the boys, what's your secret?

  4. Sorry, I didn't see your question until now. We don't have a secret. And don't let the pictures or blog fool you. I don't always take pictures and write of the difficult times.

Good question, though. We are pretty plugged in with a lot of family and friends and stuff that has to do with our church (Calvary Chapel). Maybe that's it? Wish you lived closer and we could have a playdate at the park and make a memory there. Until then, I'll have to settle with getting to know you now through this little computer.

    Hope you're enjoying the fall!
